As publishers of podcast we need better use of descriptive information when we create and publish our podcasts.

It is evident if you’ve been subscribing to podcasts for a number of months / years that you finish up with a very large number of files on your computer. This raises a number of management issues, in particular, how do we search for specific podcasts?

As a subscriber the emphasis should be on using the power of the podcatcher. That said, we the publishers need to be more proactive, in particular, we need to add a significant amounts of descriptive data to the individual episodes.

One of the advantages of iTunes (over Juice) is that it is very easy to search your podcast episodes, both titles and descriptive information. So if you add meaningful / rich descriptions then this will add significant value to the end user in terms of searching their podcast downloads.

I’d suggest that this is worth the effort given iTunes continued dominance as the podcatcher of choice by students. A recent survey of Engineering Management students (n = 112) at the University of Bristol indicated that 25% had subscribed to a podcast, and 9.9% had subscribed to a podcast in the last month. When asked which podcatcher they used to subscribe to these podcasts, 69% of respondents used iTunes.
