This report highlights that Japan and Korea have seen a development in the use of 2-D barcodes for a number of years 'aimed at simplifying the access of information and the creation of innovative mobile services that espouses the concept of ubiquitous computing - user-centric services and applications that adapt to the owner's profile and current location'.
However, they observe that this market is developing into niches because of the lack of a data definition standard across industries. This has an implication of using the technology because of the lack of application standards.
