it works - capturing podcasts on your pocket PC

posted Thursday, 16 June 2005
What a result (and I'm not talking about the cricket). I'm talking about sitting in a café, flicking on the Pocket PC, opening up FeederReader, checking for any recently updated subscribed podcasts and downloading them. Then sitting back, kicking off your heals and listening.

And the questions that we all need answering, are "was this on state of the art technology with a cost to match?", and "what exactly where you listening too?"

The answer to the first is simple, no.

  • it was on an IPAQ h2200, with an external wireless card (D-Link Air) using FeederReader (http://www.feederreader.com/ which costs $9.00).

To be perfectly honest, it was a breeze. I simply added the RSS feeds into the software using; Tools > File > Add RSS Feed. Then after it has been added and the feed is valid select Do, Play.

The mp3 files are downloaded to a new folder (feederreader / enclosures) under My Device, using the File Explorer. So you could actually open them in Media Player through that route.

I was also impressed at the speed of the download. It seemed fast, especially compared to downloading the file to a PC and then sync transfer to an external card (the current required method for Palm OSs).

As you'd expect the software is much more sophisticated than outlined in this Blog. It offers some interesting possibilities in terms of managing your all your RSS feeds and Podcasts. I'll be trying to put this through it's paces in the near future.

In terms of the second question, well what else could it be but, Andy's Fireside Chat http://www.ltss.bris.ac.uk/ole/pod/podcast.xml ;-)

I *love* stories like this ;-) PLEASE let me know what you think of FeederReader after you've put it through its paces. I hope it meets all your needs!
